Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions ... :)

Yesterday I met Sheela while I was filling the gas at the gas station near my work.
It was a total surprise as I never expected to meet her or she was no where in my mind either as it had been a long time since we last met.

We both yelled out each other’s name and gave a hug and with big smile we both – How are you my dear?

I paused and answered her first saying, ‘I am doing fine. How about you? It has been a long time.”

Last I remember she was married with a kid and so I went on asking about them too.

Sheela: I am good dear, the best time of my life I can say, but my kid is not with me!

I asked, How come?

Sheela: Long story short, Men are never made for we women. They never understand how we feel and what we go through. It’s all mere words – I know how you feel, I can understand how you feel … etc etc etc but not a single word means anything to them.

I: So you got separated with him and what about kid?

Sheela: It was in India and so he showed his power and the custody went to him. It took a while to get over all this but all I am thinking and being assured is that my child is getting everything that a child needs to grow up with except that instead of his mother he is with his grand mother.

I: But still … a mother is a mother, wouldn’t he be missing you.

Sheela: Guess what I am engaged and you will be shocked!

I: Oh, who? Anyone that I know of?

Suddenly I saw a girl came over and Sheela hugged her and kissed on her lips and said, ‘Hi Sweetie – how was your day?

And Sheela pointed towards me to her and said, “This is my friend from school time and last we met was when she was leaving India.

Michele! Sheela is my fiancé !

I was kind of looking at them as what to say and what to expect but I did shook my hand with Michele.

Sheela came to me with a big laugh and hug. She said, ‘Look, Michele loves me and I also love her. We both understand each other very well. What is my pain she can very well relate as she is a woman like me. After all we all live for love and happiness and I am very happy with my love Michele.

I was kind of puzzled and I said, sorry Sheela but I am curious you were married with a kid and now what you chose…is this by choice or by destiny?

I mean if you were lesbian and then it didn’t work with your husband then it makes totally sense and I can imagine but I never knew that you were one as I had never seen you in this way or even you expressing it to me – because we were good friends, don’t you agree?

Sheela smiled and said, yes I was married and I thought he loves me but it was like a movie, didn’t last long and then by the time I realize I got pregnant and then I decided to live with him for the child’s sake. But how long can you hide behind the veil? I was living a monotonous life with him. Either we fight or we don’t talk to each other at all, weeks after weeks. It became as if life was a formality.

Based on my degree I thought to pursue higher studies abroad and hence I gave my GRE-TOFEL and got into Davis. I finished my degree and looked for a job while I was on my student visa. God is kind, I found peace in doing things that I always wanted to do. Life is different here and I started breathing again in fresh air.
Michele, was introduced to me in a club, when I went for a social event with my co-workers. There was something that clicked between us. I think I was lost in her eyes. Her deep blue eyes which just stare at me as if those eyes are only made for me. I know you will find this all poetic and rubbish. Believe me, I am telling you exactly what I felt..!

We exchanged our numbers and we left. One Friday I got a call from Michele asking if I would like to go for a concert with her. Frankly speaking her phone and her talk made my heart beat fast – after I hang up with her on the phone, I was smiling from inside. I don’t know what was it, but I thought I should flow with the wind without making any judgments.

That Friday I met her at the Yoshi’s and it was the night of lovers. Michele and me were like one soul together enjoying the music and there after food and wine. It was all so good until I saw it was too late in the night to go home. Michele, lives in San Francisco and so her house is near by. I accepted her invitation and went to her place. We were talking about our life and experiences in life and I don’t even know when I went to sleep.

Morning when I woke up, Michele was there with a cup of coffee looking at me and smiling. I immediately woke up and was about to say – no need of all this, you should have called me.
But she repeated all my dialog and said – I don’t want to hear that. I just smiled and took the coffee from her hand … I don’t know what it was but we are together now for life and I love it!

What do you need in life? A loving person who can be your friend, partner who can understand you, make you happy, share your pain and be there for you? – I have that person in my life, if that person is like me, so what? We are still two different individuals who love and do our own things and are happy to support each other!

I had filled the gas by then and I think I was holding the other cars at the back… I just quickly recovered from all this and said, nice meeting you Sheela, sorry have to rush to work… but be in touch and gave a hug to her and Michele.

I drove quickly to my office and in my mind I was thinking, is it by choice or by circumstance? And all I could see is her life in India.

Someone said, "Without music life would be a mistake", so TRUE!!!

The Festival au désert ("Festival in the Desert") is an annual concert in Mali, showcasing traditional Tuareg music as well as music from around the world. From 2001 until 2009 the festival was held in Essakane but because of security issues, from 2010 the festival has been held on the outskirts of Timbuktu.

This weekend the Mali Fest is going on in San Francisco and the best I feel is that how lucky we are that we get to watch all these people from Mali, who after suffering pain, atrocities yet bring out the happy music of all.
Through music they are fighting their war for peace, equal rights and women empowerment.

Today for the first time I had a chance to see Fatoumata Diawara, who is from Mali – which is known for its musical traditions. Her music, her craziness, her enthralling and powerful views about peace, love and empowerment for women, its so influencing through music. The oneness that music brings around is something so unique that no matter which part of the world you belong, music binds you in one string no matter what color, creed or gender you are. There is one religion, one food for soul and that is MUSIC.
One got to listen to these happy and dancing numbers that Fatou sings while she is playing her guitar. The story of pain and suffering yet coming out strong is such an inspiring one. I was amazed to hear about her today that she was born to Malian parents and despite strong opposition from her parents, she denied an arrange marriage to pursue her artistic ambitions and flew to Paris.
This is where one see, if you got to do it, you got to do it. I am so proud of this woman, who through her music is spreading the love. She says we are blacks, whites, and yellow but inside us the blood is Red. Stop killing and torturing people, lets live with love and peace.

It’s such a heart tearing when she says, your kids must be going to school and study but kids in Mali their education is outside of the book that you read in the school. Many lessons are learned outside of the book and it is so true. We all will agree with one thing that what we studied in school in those books within those four walls is much far from reality and we all learn it in our own way in our unique experiences in life.

I had the opportunity to hug her and convey my best wishes for the task she is doing and that is taking music across the universe and spreading the message of love and peace for humanity.
I think we all should support such music as these people only survive on MUSIC and that too the reason is for a good cause.

To fall and rise like a true dawn!

This was the day when
The stream of strength
Followed with me to walk
When I was thinking "am alone"!
A journey which I chose
A journey she walked without knowing
The trust brought us together
To fall and rise like a true dawn!
Feeling of togetherness
A time well spent on relation
Which made us best friends
Only to grow together once again!
I know the time will come
To say goodbye in life
But am sure she will carry the relay
Being a living extension of mine!

Happy Birthday to My Extension ;)

Today is an important day in my life, yes April 17th, 1999 I was able to deliver a much desired baby girl – Rhea. This day I became ‘VAMA’ – a WOMAN.
I had her name decided even before she was born or rather even before I knew of having a baby girl. Somewhere in my heart, I was very confident about raising a baby girl as supposed to a baby boy.
Naming my kid Rhea – also had a significance which I call as life is full of struggle yet how to make it a success is all up to us. I liked to call my daughter Rhea – which means “Stream” in Hindi – though it has many meanings in other languages. I wanted my daughter to be like that stream which flows smoothly no matter how the path is. Streams they make their way.
This was my first teaching to my daughter, telling her the meaning of her name and why I chose one for her. I still remember the day April 17th 1999 at 3:00 pm the doctor asked me what would you like – a boy or a girl? And me being cautious said, ‘A healthy baby’. The doctors tried their best to get out of me and when they couldn’t they tried a different question this time – What would you name if the baby is a boy? – I said, I don’t know yet! And what would you name if the baby is a girl? – Rhea

They laughed out and said, here’s your Rhea and I heard one delicate voice of cry and it brought tears of happiness in my eyes.

That day and now – 15 years is a long way and many more long ways to go but that’s the best thing happened to me. When I thought I am alone in this world, I found an extension of me .
She remained my extension and now I see it turned into a best friend relationship. Previously as a kid till I became VAMA, I used to tell everything to my dairy, now I tell to Rhea. A relationship that we both have built together, irrespective of what came into our life as a change, we didn’t stop there. Today, I feel so proud to say that I do have a best friend, something which I never committed even in school.

When Rhea, comes and discusses her story whether it’s about her teachers, friends in her school or outside, her crushes, her dream to marry Zyan Malik (until he got engaged), the scary stories of pregnant school mates or kids who are being caught for drugs, or even when for the first time she had to dial 911 in school to protect a guy who was being bashed by other outside guys or even her feedback on her dad – I find my daughter is way matured for her age. I am sure life has its own values and learning that educates us and make us wise about a situation. I like the way she thinks and the way she reacts to a situation, makes me a worry free mom – specially to those who always told me wait until they turn 10, or teen  I am happy about my girl – it’s her 15th birthday but the way she treats me – it feels like I am 15.

As I wish my kid her 15th Happy Birthday, I also say THANK YOU Rhea, for walking with me along side by side through the journey that I chose for US.

Your Madre’s advice to you on this day is -  Live the life the way you dream and desire for, never think of what someone else will think. Your happiness is yours and no one knows it better than yourself. Go for it!

Music is the moonlight in the gloomy night of life ;)

The weekend had begun in a classical science fiction way on Friday evening with the pure magic of Karsh Kale’s breaking the rules.
Yes, he loves to break the rules and guess what? Music lovers love it more and more as each time he breaks the rule.
I mean one can think of playing certain instrument based on the ragas and jam the session. But Karsh Kale is known for his mucianship who bridges between the time, space and era in one single round. Believe me, you got to experience it for once at least in life time.

I happen to watch him twice by now and last time even though it was an awesome composition and orchestration, the sound system wasn’t that good. This year, he totally turned things ups and down. I mean you got to give that chance to self to mesmerize a moment that is being created just for you.
It was such an auspicious feeling as I just felt am just born now and its long way to go in this feeling to be nurtured forever.

A feeling one cannot put it in words, as something that one can feel is always a feeling that one person explores within. It cannot be the same for the other person as that person will have his/her own version of feelings.

The best part I felt is the drummer and a table and keyboard player – Karsh and his enthralling team (Max ZT on Santoor, Indian classical vocalist – Aditya Prakash, who toured with Ravi Shankar and Alam Khan on Sarode – son of maestro Ali Akbar Khan), when they performed it was ‘zone’ moment where nothing can distract you in life. A moment which kept the audience wondering what will be next and at the end we did get the surprise with the presence of rap singer Mandeep Sethi.

I ended up thinking Karsh is Krazy !!! :D

Love is my weapon, Music is my religion and Peace is in my soul ;)

Never let go of a good thing without a fight. Especially if that good thing is Life

I remember meeting her at work, discussing some project and I was part of the conversation and ... I dont know how and when but a friendship had already began..!

A very strong and caring one. Our hearts are always tuned in though we never meet everyday or chat everyday or even not text everyday... but the thought and love for our friendship is always there.

When you think of a person and that brings smile and sometimes laughter... It's hilarious too...yes that is one of the person Wen Hui that I have ever known in my life.

It was fun to talk to Wen, in the beginning when we used to talk about our country and culture and people. It was easy to understand each other's culture. Later it is all fun and frolic... I mean a woman with substance and strength is what I have seen in Wen.

It was so much fun when we all friends met to celebrate Wen Hui's birthday, it is a great milestone and we had so much fun. She talks to you in such a way that you will not feel that there is anything in this world that is illegal or wrong...! She makes life so simple with beautiful guidelines and rules.

When she is at work then no nonsense will happen as she will demand, not ask! I always enjoyed my lunch chat or even dinner chats with her. In fact I remember when she talks everyone will just be focussed on her listening to every word that she spills out... she has a knack of story telling and indeed it is wonderful.

When we friends came to know about Wen Hui has detected cancer... we all felt very sad as we have never seen her sad or in a situation where someone will feel sorry for her...and how she will take this one .. !

Today I met her in person and my heart was rushing with blood because thats how powerful she is. A very strong woman I have met today her spirit is same as she was before the diagnose and she talks and shares the stories exactly the same way and her jokes and humor sense, gosh its just that she makes everyone's life easier who are in her surroundings. I am sure the doctors and hospital staff must be feeling lucky to treat this person as she does 90% of their job with her positive and strong will power and rest 10% is done by the medicine

I wanted to yell out from that room to the entire world... that one should lead by this example that this role model is leading - my love and respect for this friend has grown to the highest level. I am proud to be a friend of a tough yet smiling Role Model.

Who doesn't go through pain and difficulty in life... but this is so true... we know we all are going to die but then why worry and make that to come in hurry...You can stay strong and fight it hard - there is a little pleasure in fighting back always!

I salute the lady whom I saw today - I witnessed the iron lady - May the power be with you my friend... we will see you soon with another chit-chat session to laugh at.

Happy Happy Day ;)

Life is full of surprises
Get amazed at each one
As you sail through
Make sure you live
While you make through
It’s about all about You
Your happiness reflects
In your surroundings
When the glow falls on you
There will be storms
And many hurdles
See them as challenge
And surprise them
Cause whether you live or die
You face it and fly

Happy Poetry Day to All!!!

Privileged! Feel sad!

Sometimes, we need to pause and reflect on the privileges we often take for granted—the freedom to speak, the right to live with dignity, ...
